Pilar de la Horadada was part of Orihuela until it became a municipality of its own in the 1980s. Today more than 24,000 people live there. The coast has several beaches, among them Mil Palmeras, Río Seco, Las Villas and El Mojón. A golf course lies about 7 km away and Murcia-Corvera airport about 55 km, some 40 minutes by car.
